Maintaining Proper Posture
One of the top causes of musculoskeletal pain is poor posture. It doesn't matter if you are sitting at a desk for eight hours a day or on your feet—if you don't maintain a neutral posture, then you are at risk for chronic muscle strain.
Keeping a neutral posture not only helps prevent this pain but helps with circulation throughout your body, helping you feel more energized throughout your day. Maintaining this posture will depend on your job. For example, a neutral elbow position while sitting at a desk or driving for work requires keeping your elbow at a 90-degree angle.
Allowing for Plenty of Breaks Throughout Your Day
Another common cause of musculoskeletal disorders is neglecting to take breaks throughout the workday and stretch your body. Your body is designed to move; it’s unnatural to stay still for a solid eight hours a day or more.
Maintaining a static position also can cause you to feel fatigued. Make sure you are taking frequent breaks to walk around and stretch your muscles a bit.
Providing Adequate Lighting
Lighting in your workspace is more important than you might think. When working at your desk without proper lighting, you run the risk of squinting more and leaning in towards your computer screen. This takes your body out of its neutral position and causes unnecessary strain on your neck and back.
